So, on one hand, you're right, people never bother to Google even the little things. But on the other hand, back when we were growing up and had the Grammys, there was no Twitter, so the kids who didn't know who the Beatles were never said anything ,hence we didn't know they existed. But how many people used to be ignorant and also be proud of it? We'll never know, because no social media.

How much of history is lost just because the people making the history never recorded it?

OMG, I could NOT possibly be in more agreement with you. This is a very salient and insightful post, and I think you're right how it would make a great dissertation.

I see this same thing in daily life with great dismay. I feel like a Get Off My Lawn type sometimes too, but it's not like I'm 60 or 70. These people are not ALL that much younger than me!

When I'm out with friends, if a topic comes up and there is a fact that we can't recall or in dispute, people around my age immediately go reaching for our phones to look it up. I see little or none of that in the Millennials.

I hear a lot of the same "that happened before I was born" excuse, and I think, "That's relevant because ... ?"

99 percent of what we're supposed to learn in school--math, history, language, science, etc.--was all known before we were born. And as you say, many of them DO wear their ignorance like a badge. It baffles and saddens me.

For the record, the Beatles are my favorite musical group/musicians of all time, hands down. It used to be Mozart, so that shows you how much I love them. Meeting Macca--and introducing him at a press conference, no less--was one of those "I can die happy" moments. It seems like those kinds of experiences for those who come after us will be shallow and empty.

Several years ago (academic year 1992-1993), I was accepted into Southern Illinois University Law School. Upon my acceptance, I was visited by the Holy Spirit, and began to cry joyously, thanking Jesus. While doing so, the Holy Spirit subsequently told me that I would not succeed, and that God had something planned for me. I found it hard to believe in that it was through prayer that I was accepted into school. Needless to say, I did not succeed. While at the school, Jesus appeared before me as a dark silhouette, with brilliant light all about His presence (3 a.m.). When He spoke to me, my whole body shook at the sound of His voice. Subsequently, He changed my skin-tone to reddish-black, like where the redness from the flame meets the black on an ember of coal; at that time, an angel whispered: This is the color of Jesus. At a later date, I was guided to Rev. 1:15 (it was as if Jesus was turning the pages Himself), where it talks about His feet were like fine brass, as if burned in a furnace - brass is yellow but turns black when burned. Subsequent thereto, He has had me prophesy many things. My first prophesy was that there was going to be an immediate increase in the magnitude of weather and other phenomena. Amongst others, I forwarded the prophesy to Jesse Jackson and Peter Jennings. Within a week of doing so, five hurricanes hit Florida, in immediate succession. As time progressed, God had me prophesy subsequent increases in the magnitude of weather and other phenomena to (amongst others) Rick Sanchez, prior to their occurrence. In that people were not listening, He had me change my prophesy to: There shall be great trials, tribulations, and devastation - like you have never seen; until I am heard to His satisfaction. Since then, many things have happened in which it was said: I have never seen anything like this before. When Bob Riley was governor of Alabama, God had me email him a letter stating: Great storms shall rest upon Alabama - no need for further explication. The night before the tsunami hit Japan, and subsequent tornadoes within the United States, God had me post on my facebook page (www.facebook.com/slimji): Am I seeing great trials, tribulation, and devastation, like I prophesied. On the same day, or day prior, to the recent tornadoes in Alabama (January 2012), God placed a golden eagle, in the city limits of Huntsville, Alabama, for me to see (as being symbolic of my spirit), and had me post: I am seeing more and more unusual things in unusual ways - it is odd to see a tornado in Alabama in January. He is saying that He is tired of racism and violence in the world. He is also saying that He has blessed America abundantly, and that all blessings flow from Him: To whom much is given, much is expected; this includes hearing His servant. However, America does not want to hear. As such, there shall be a great cry! Him that hath an ear, let him hear.

I tried it again on a recent cross-country road trip. I had to set the alarm on my phone so that I remembered each day. I ended up with a lot of shots of my steering wheel. When I realized I had started to plan to be somewhere interesting by 3:00, I realized I was violating the spirit of the project.

I think I see what you're saying. Personally, I think the airlines brought this rule on themselves by unpacking so many standard services and charging them as extra fees. It seems as if they were deliberately trying to bewilder consumers and distract them from the real number they were probably going to have to pay. You and I may be savvy passengers, but someone's grandmother, or someone who doesn't travel a lot, would not be aware there are taxes, baggage fees, and other necessary (for them) costs. The airlines brought anger upon themselves by reducing advertised fares to a price that would always be impossible to attain.

If there is an unfairness in this new rule, it's that other markets, such as clothing and books and food, don't have to advertise this way. I would prefer that tax is ALWAYS included. But on the other hand, customers weighing a purchase in those industries will always have a standard expectation of what the additional cost would be. We essentially know to tack on a little more for tax when we buy anything. For the airlines, though, we never really could anticipate all the costs at the outset, and that was intentional on their part.

Anya, I remember walking around Edinburgh four or five months later and suddenly being overcome by the need to sit down on a bench and think about it. I think that nearly every person who was within range of that event suffered PTSD on some level. It may be a reason I still get a little sore when people who only saw it on TV start talking about how shocked they were. There's always a part of me that has to bite my tongue against telling them they will never have any idea, because it was still important to many of us and I can't disregard that just because I happened to be nearer to it.

I and my friend Eulalie Mackecknie Shinn were just talking about these issues. We totally agree. We also do not subscribe to the rumor that "the girl is hard to get" because we heard she will brazenly walk in the flower garden if you ask her to.

And what of "The Music Man?" Why did Marian inherit all those book from that old miser? The townspeople raise their eyebrows, but let it go at spreading innuendo (instead of running her out of town, or over to the wrong side of the tracks, probably because they need those books for the library) while Harold Hill tags her as a "sadder-but-wiser girl" and the one for his tom-cattin', wanderin' ways. And what of the passion pit that is the River City footbridge?

Jason, thanks for sharing this. I finally wrote out my experience at the 10 year anniversary. It's amazing how, for New Yorkers that day, the experience was so personal, individual, and yet universal at the same time. It doesn't really make sense that I feel this way but I always tell people that as horrible as the day was and as awful and anxious as the many months following were, I wouldn't have wanted to be anywhere else. The idea of running far away from Manhattan was both appealing and terrifying. And it's crazy how just writing about it now can bring back those feelings. Anyway, I love your piece on it... And hugs to you from me.

(I'm ranting - please excuse any errors) Yeah they may be whining but do you see what they are saying. So lets say an airline advertised a fare at $140. Maybe in a month a security fee is increased by $20...NOT the air fare. Now they have to advertise the fare for $160. Unknown to you is the fare has gone by $20 because of an increase on the security fee, overall you would just believe "oh the airline raised their fare". That's what I believe they are saying.

Remember this same airline that offered "free" flights several years ago....only catch was you had to pay the taxes on the flights to travel. Well think about....if they tried to offer free flights now.....how would they do it....?? The airfare is $0, but because the new rules (based on roundtrip from New York to Ft. Lauderdale) they would have to advertise $148.36. But its free?....not according to your government :-)

I live about 2 hours south of rosewood, saw the movie again last night. There are still so many flordians that have never even heard of rosewood. I get sick to my stomach every time i see that movie. I was raised by a racist father and grandmother and have dead relatives who were very active in the clan all through central & north florida and alabama from the 1920's-1960's . I am not proud of my heritage and the hate i was taught.. I pray they can find those mass graves so we can know the true numbers of those that suffered and may they rest in peace.

Thanks for posting this, Jason. I have fond memories of traveling through the Badlands of South Dakota. I remember being very young traveling in an overloaded camper on a blistering hot summer day. The scenery was memorizing, like you said. However, there was no HD when I was young.
